Dumbing Us Down: The Hidden Curriculum of Compulsory SchoolingDumbing Us Down: The Hidden Curriculum of Compulsory Schooling by John Taylor Gatto
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This books talks about the 7 things that every school teaches students, no matter the socioeconomic status or location. If anyone has concerns about why schools are turning out bullies, why our kids seem to know less than any other industrialized nation, why we are so focused on tests, why kids have so much homework, and why do schools keep needing more money when the problems in education only seem to be getting worse? Read this book.

This book does an excellent job of identifying the issues of today’s government education system, it does not do a very good job of letting us know what we can do, as a society, to fix it. He does make a few mild suggestions, but you will have to read the book to figure them out. Just like anything else we hand over to the government, education is destined to fail and it is failing on a grand scale. The cost of this failure will continue to be great until we find some way to genuinely fix the issues he names.
