Through Waters Deep (Waves of Freedom, #1)Through Waters Deep by Sarah Sundin

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Mary works as a secretary for the naval shipyard in Boston. She loves her job and it precipitates her meeting an old friend, Jim, from high school. She agrees to show Jim and his friend around Boston. While they are getting to know each other again, there is an act of sabotage on the destroyer Jim and his friend are going be shipped out on.
The plot thickens, and more acts of sabotage convince Mary that she needs to use her talents to help in the investigation, Nancy Drew style. Jim is her sounding-board and friend. When an old friend comes back to try and catch Jim’s eye, Mary has to decide if she will step out in faith, or sink back into the shadows.

I loved this story from the first page. It is well-written and the minute details of the history and geography make you feel as if you are truly walking around Boston in 1941. Mary and Jim feel abundantly real. The history was fascinating, the plot inventive, and the characters well-defined and likable, plus beautiful cover art.

I loved Mary from the start. I don’t identify as well with the current trend of the “Alpha-female”. Mary has fears, she doesn’t like the limelight. She has been given some guidance and had some terrible experiences that make her feel more like silver than gold. She has no confidence and her insecurities make Jim think she doesn’t care. I can relate.

Sarah has quite a few books out and this one was good enough that I will definitely be adding more of her books to my to-be-read pile.
