The prologue of this book says that this is the story of Cole Taylor and that it is true and it reads just as if it were.
Cole is injured on the job as a firefighter and it is the last straw in the relationship for his wife. Cole has been working so hard at providing that he doesn’t realize the growing issues at home. He doesn’t see the distance his wife is creating, until she up and leaves for a vacation…and doesn’t return.
While the page with the disclaimer on declares this to be fiction, I had to keep reminding myself of that. It reads, tragically, like the non-fiction going on in so many marriages today. As the author notes, when the flames get high and you are ready to run, that is the time to fall into God’s arms and let him lead. If you rely on your own words or feelings, you run the risk of making it worse.
I had to say, I sided with Cole’s wife at first. He worked a lot, went out with friends and seemed completely unwilling to help. It reminded me of a time many years ago in my own life. Then she left and I sided with Cole again. I won’t go into the end, you’ll have to read it to figure out what happens.
If you are looking for an emotionally moving and deep read, this is definitely a good one to pick up.
