Wednesdays I’ll be featuring authors from a Facebook group I am a part of, Pioneer Hearts. The authors at Pioneer Hearts have two things in common, we write historical Westerns and we write Romance. You can find almost any heat level there that you’re looking for except erotica. Because of this fact, I’ve added a new little icon on the bottom of my Western reviews, a heat level, so you as a reader know what to expect.

Alexis James was the first of Joshua’s daughters to put two and two together, figuring out that her father’s sudden interest in new ranch hands had less to do with work on the Broken J Ranch and more to do with his daughter’s futures. Serious and thoughtful she lives for learning and her twin sister, but when Issy quickly marries one of the brothers who arrive to help grow wheat on the Wyoming prairie she finds herself set adrift and confused by this thing called love.
Reginald Ogden is a simple farmer with quiet ways and a keen, analytical mind but will he be able to use reason to explain the strange feelings building in his heart or will he need a little help?

Alexis is book five of a series, but you can easily read this as a stand-alone. I have a few of the other stories in this series and now look forward to reading them. I really enjoyed the characters and love how the ranch life really shines in the story. It is obvious Danni knows about this life and wants to share it with you in a natural and compelling way.
My favorite part of the book is the “experiment” I thought it was so incredibly sweet and yet funny. The character of Alexis is intelligent and questioning, I love how she just is who she is, no matter where she’s placed. Though I didn’t immediately love Reg, it wasn’t because of how he was written, just that he didn’t click with me until the story was about half done, but I loved the family and the way they all interact which makes me want to read the rest of the series.
Danni Roan, born in rural western Pennsylvania, has always loved the country life. Her first work published under her real name, Paula Liddle-Beem, is a collection of folk essays about childhood in the lush, green mountains of PA. Being a teacher of English and English as a Second Language for the past twelve years has only inspired Danni’s love of writing Western Historical Fiction. After receiving her Masters of Education in Teaching English as a Foreign Language she determined to indulge her passion for fiction writing. Teaching both in the USA and abroad has exposed Danni to a wide range of people from all walks of life and she tries to capture that unique character in her work.
